My kingdom for a host!
I took the plunge tonight and decided to buy some web hosting for this blog. To let it take it’s first faltering steps on the world stage. Sure, no-one will probably find it or read it, but at least the possibility exists that someone might, by some strange miracle.
This has turned out to be a somewhat dispiriting process.
There are just so many hosting options.
It’s an embarrassment of riches.
I’m reminded of the Devo song “Freedom of Choice”. (I’m probably misremembering the lyrics to the great distress of all you Devo fans out there).
Anyway, my memory is that it starts talking about how people want freedom of choice, and shifts to talking about how what people really want is freedom from choice.
Choice is hard. What if you make the wrong one?
And having too many things to choose between is even harder, sometimes even paralysing. The potential for “buyers remorse” seems to grow exponentially with each additional option.
I ended up asking a friend who knows more about these sorts of things his opinion.
Phew. One choice avoided. “I’ll have what he’s having.”
But then I mucked up the signup process when my browser seemed to timeout after hitting submit the first time. Damn!
So I filled in my details again and submitted them and it worked fine. Joy!
Nope. Now I appear to be signed up twice. Bugger!
So I’ve sent some emails to their support team. Sigh.
I’m sure it will all get sorted out in the end. But I feel frustrated and strangely churned up by the whole process. So it’s been quite a roller coaster of an evening, leaving me somewhat emotionally exhausted.
All over a hosting decision. I really need a thicker skin.
I’m sure there’s a million options for getting one of those too.
I’m not even going to look.
